In 2001, LawDepot's founder Ken Sawyer needed a Promissory Note (that's legalese for an IOU). After an inconvenient experience with a lawyer, Ken wondered if there was an easier way to create legal documents. Having already started a business in software development, the solution seemed obvious: create software that can generate credible, custom legal documents for everyday people. What started as a simple IOU expanded into hundreds of document templates to address the many real-life situations that people face every day.
